jemima brown
This body of work was first shown as part of a solo exhibition at The Agency Gallery in 2007. The work functions as a part celebratory, part critical representation of the hedonism that drove much of the Twentieth century’s hero-worship, culminating in today’s unashamed travesty of the media worship of fake and real heroes and heroines. She creates visual fiction, which is informed by a universalistic gossip, which in itself is never the ultimate truth but a summary of lives and lifestyles that lead to immortalisation on the silver screen, imaginary or real.
Jemima Brown initially studied in London completing both a degree and MFA at Chelsea College of Art. She subsequently received a Fullbright Award to complete a period as guest artist in Mary Kelly’s department at UCLA and in 2006 was a Cocheme Fellow at Byam Shaw School of Art, University of the Arts, London.
She has presented work extensively in solo and group shows in London and abroad. Her solo exhibition credits include The Agency, London; Rosy Wilde, London; Artspace Witzenhausen, Amsterdam; Jeffrey Charles Gallery, London; Vilma Gold, London; Otto, Copenhagen; Cokkie Snoei, Rotterdam and PUSH Art, San Francisco.
Her work has appeared in a broad range of group shows and large projects including those at Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin; De Bond, Bruges; Irvine Fine Arts Centre, Irvine; MAMA, Rotterdam; The Royal Academy, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris, Oude Kerk, Amsterdam; Turbinehallerne, Copenhagen, ANP, Antwerp and The Fries Museum, Leeuwarden amongst others.
Jemima is currently working on a large installation for EVERY BODY, a group show at Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, Norway in April 2008, which also features the Chapman Brothers. She is represented by The Agency Gallery.
